Curriculum Intent
Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

At Rosedale Primary School, Art plays a key role in ensuring pupils receive a rich, broad and balanced education. Through Art and Design, children are encouraged to develop practical skills and to communicate their ideas, interests and emotions in creative ways.

The art curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and imagination by offering a wide range of visual, sensory and hands-on experiences. Art allows children to explore the world from different perspectives and supports personal expression. We are committed to inclusion and ensure that all pupils are supported to meet the expectations of the National Curriculum. By nurturing children’s natural curiosity, the curriculum enables them to discover and develop their own creative voice. Lessons are structured to inspire, challenge and motivate pupils to explore materials, refine techniques and reflect on their creative choices.

Our Art and Design curriculum has been thoughtfully constructed ,It incorporates selected elements of the CUSP art curriculum alongside carefully designed, school-specific content to provide a high-quality learning experience. This ensures pupils develop the confidence  to think and communicate creatively, using the knowledge and processes of an artist. With high expectations at its core, the curriculum promotes understanding  through progressive skill development, experimentation with a range of media and exposure to a diverse selection of artists.

Clear and ambitious intent underpins our approach. Quality teaching supports pupils in building artistic knowledge and applying it with increasing accuracy and independence. As children move through the school, they deepen their understanding by linking new learning to prior knowledge, becoming more skilled and reflective artists over time.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

·are able to record from first-hand experience and from imagination.

·can select their own ideas for use in their work.

·develop creativity and imagination through a variety of engaging experiences.

·develop the ability to control materials, tools and techniques.

·increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design from different times and cultures.

·become confident using different mediums

·foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of different artists

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in art and design, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. We primarily focus on the knowledge and skills stated in the National curriculum, and teach art at least once every term.
