Curriculum Intent

Our Maths curriculum aims to ensure pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.
  • Develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly.
  • Reason and problem solve by applying mathematics to a variety of increasingly complex problems.

To develop resilience that enables all children to reason and problem solve with increased confidence.

Curriculum Implementation

From Reception...

From Reception we begin to work towards this intent, using Mastering Number, a programme that to aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

From Year 1

Whilst continuing with Mastering Number, to secure the firm foundations of good number sense, pupils access lessons based on the White Rose Maths Curriculum. We have adapted small step sequences to meet the needs of our school (e.g. mixed-age classes). Within these lessons, pupils secure fluency whilst applying their knowledge to reasoning and problem-solving.

Maths Flashback

The beginning of each maths lesson begins with a 'flashback'. We have identified the key fluency facts and calculations that pupils are equipped with in each year group. The 'flashback' is adapted based on identified group and whole-class gaps, reviewing facts and calculations from both previous lessons and previous year groups, to ensure automaticity.
