We have created a bespoke knowledge-rich curriculum that ensures children are given broad access to the subjects of history, geography and science. 

Our geography curriculum makes learning relevant for our children at Rosedale and teaches carefully sequenced knowledge to allow children to build on their understanding of the wider world.

Locational knowledge

Throughout their geography studies, children build their knowledge of where places are. In Foundation Stage children begin by learning about the immediate area around them - our school and where it is located. In Key Stage 1, children find out more about the location of Doncaster in the wider world, learning to name countries, capitals and surrounding seas of the UK as well as continents and oceans. In KS2 children build on this knowledge further, looking closely at European countries and capitals as well as a range of countries spanning different continents around the world.

Human and physical geography knowledge

Children secure their vocabulary of basic human geographical features, such as school, road, train station, bus stop and shop. In KS1, this vocabulary is expanded and more physical geography is introduced, with children becoming confident with words such as mountain, river, sea and ocean. Children also look closely at the weather and seasons, supported by studies of hot and cold places, including the Arctic and tropical rainforests.

In KS2, children learn about human and physical geography over several studies of both the UK and wider world, focusing on climate, deserts, mountains, rivers, volcanoes and the water cycle, moving onto classifying different environments, ecosystems, biomes and time zones. By the time children reach Year 6, they can use this accrued knowledge to think critically about important issues such as climate change and renewable energy.

Place knowledge

To really understand the similarities and differences between different places around the world, children do comparison studies throughout their geography learning. In Foundation Stage, this begins with children looking at rural African farming as part of their wider farming topic. In KS1, children compare Brazil and England, with a focus on what is the same and different about the capital cities of London and Brasilia. In KS2, children use their knowledge of physical and human geography and deepening understanding of different cultures to study places around the world, including Egypt, Greece, Australia, South America and a study of the USA, including a comparison of Yellowstone National Park with Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.  

Geographical skills and fieldwork

All of the children’s geographical knowledge is underpinned by practical skills. Children in Foundation Stage use simple fieldwork within the school grounds to identify different areas and what they are used for. In KS1, children practice using maps and atlases and learn how to draw their own map using simple symbols and a key. In KS2, children learn how to use a map or atlas to locate different areas with specific geographical features and use Ordnance Survey grid references and the eight points of a compass to locate places accurately. Children are given lots of opportunities to use and develop these skills during fieldwork throughout their time at Rosedale.
