In total there are 175 non-school days a year. This gives families the opportunity to:

• Go on holiday
• Go on days out
• Attend routine appointments
The law says that parents do not have the right to take their child out of school during term-time. If you take your child on out during term-time without the schools permission this will be recorded as unauthorised absence and may result in parents being issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice.
Why shouldn’t I take my child out of school during term time?
Many parents and carers think it is okay to go on holiday during term time, this has a negative affect on their children’s learning and ability to achieve. If your child goes on holiday during term time, they are absent.
• 10 days absence = 95% attendance
• 19 days absence = 90% attendance
• 29 days absence = 85% attendance
• 38 days absence = 80% attendance
• 47 days absence = 75% attendance
Children with over 90% attendance are more likely to gain 5 or more A-C GCSE’S or equivalent qualifications.
How do I request leave of absence during term time?
All requests should be made on an Application for Leave of Absence form which is available from your child’s school
This should be submitted no later than 21 days before the start of the holiday.
Will the school authorise taking my child away during term-time?
Parents cannot demand leave of absence be granted for a family holiday. The Head teacher has a discretionary power to grant leave but is under no obligation to do so.
What will the head teacher consider when dealing with my request?
Has the child already had some absence due to a family holiday in the current academic year.
The child’s current level of attendance.
It is near or during examination or test times
Does the holiday coincide with the start of the school year.
Will taking this absence have a harmful effect on your child’s education?
What happens if the head teacher does not agree my request?
Your child’s absence will be marked as unauthorised absence.
If you take your child out of school during term time your child’s school may request the Local Authority issue a Fixed Penalty Notice. If a Fixed Penalty Notice is issued the penalty is £60 when the payment is made within 21 days. If payment is made after 21 days but within 28 days will increase to £120. Failure to pay within 28 days will result in a summons to appear before the Magistrates Court on the grounds that you have failed to secure your child’s regular attendance at School.

Remember to always inform school staff when your child is absent from school, giving the reason. If there are circumstances where you feel there is no alternative but to take your child out of school in term time, you must request approval by the Head Teacher. You should complete an application form, available from school or from this page, at least 21 days before the proposed start date of the holiday. If your reason for taking holidays in term time is because your employer prohibits a holiday in school holiday times, you should provide a letter to that effect signed by your employer. The Headteacher will decide whether this can be authorised. You must submit your application for authorisation prior to making any holiday booking.
